a: Angiogenesis ~
b: a single weed on a tennis court

What: "Drawing on his knack for folksy analogies, Folkman compares treating cancer to maintaining a tennis court. Laid out flat, the endothelial cells in an adult's blood vessels would cover an entire court surface, he says. Like clay, "normal endothelial cells almost never grow," hence are relatively invulnerable to antiangiogenic drugs. "Tumor angiogenesis is like a single weed growing on the court."
